How much buffet food per person?
For a classic warm-and-cold buffet without dessert, the practical source cited here gives roughly 700 g of food per adult and about 400 g per child. EventCalc distributes that total across a main component, sides, salad and bread. The key point: several dishes in one category share that demand — they are not each calculated as a full portion.
How the total is split
| Category | Per adult | Per child |
|---|---|---|
| Main component | 245 g | 140 g |
| Sides | 245 g | 140 g |
| Salad | 140 g | 80 g |
| Bread | 70 g | 40 g |
| Total | 700 g | 400 g |
The source values are the totals of 700 g and 400 g, plus the published range for each category. The EventCalc allocation is the four concrete figures above: each sits inside the source's range, and together they add up to exactly the source's total. The source does not recommend these four exact numbers — it sets the frame, and EventCalc picks a coherent split within it.
Several dishes share one pool
The most common planning mistake is to cost every dish on offer as a full portion. At a buffet nobody takes the full amount of everything. So if you offer three main dishes, EventCalc splits the one main-component pool across those three — a fourth dish does not increase the total demand, it only shifts the shares.

What the total does not include
The source figure explicitly covers a buffet without dessert. Desserts and drinks therefore sit outside this pool and are planned through their own models in EventCalc.

Frequently asked questions
- How much food per person at a buffet?
- Around 700 g per adult and about 400 g per child for a classic buffet without dessert.
- How much buffet food for 50 people?
- For 50 adult guests, roughly 35 kg of food in total, split across the four categories.
- Do I have to cost every dish as a full portion?
- No. Several dishes in the same category share that category's demand. An extra dish does not raise the total — it redistributes it.
- Are dessert and drinks included?
- No. The underlying figure covers a buffet without dessert, and drinks are not part of this amount either.
- Where do the four category figures come from?
- The source gives a range per category plus a total. EventCalc picks four values that fall inside those ranges and add up to exactly that total. That is an EventCalc allocation, not a literal recommendation from the source.
